IN MEMORIAM - JOHN J. DOHERTY

News SEPTEMBER 11, 2021

By Ron Sanossian

Webmaster note: I'm posting this on Saturday for what I hope are obvious reasons. The Sunday update will be posted on Monday and then we will return to the regular schedule on Thursday. Thank you again to Ron for putting this together on short notice.

John J. Doherty

Saxony Member, Husband, Father and Friend

For those of you who have joined the Club since September 11, 2001 you may have only heard about John. John, a Boston College alum, was a Vice President at AON Insurance in the World Trade Center and was in his office on that fateful morning. (WM Note: John worked on the 92nd floor of Two World Trade Center (the South Tower))

He was a Saxonite long before EZ Reserve, which meant getting to the course on Friday night and sleeping in his car, as was done back in the day, to get a prime tee time for the following week. Then after spending a “restful” night in the car attempting to go out and play golf that same day, something some of us tried but never seemed to master.

John was a big fan of the club events where members played with others not in their usual foursome, in fact the first Ryder Cup event we had was a memorial to him.

In the year following September 11, we received permission from the County to plant a tree in John’s memory and placed a plaque at its roots. For those that don’t know it is located alongside the path coming up from 18 on the left side opposite the pro shop. Today when you finish your round stop by and say hello to one of our own.

John's obituary was published in the New York Times and titled "Always Time For Golf". You can find it here: http://www.legacy.com/sept11/aon/Story.aspx?PersonID=98353&location=4.
