2013 PBB Champions: Chris Paul & Rob Herschenfeld

On the Summer's first really warm weekend our four finalists teed off at 80 degrees and things only got hotter from there.  After 9 holes they were still All Square.  Chris and Rob managed to take #10, but the lead was short lived.  The match stayed close throughout the back and they came to 18 teee All Square.

By that time the sun and heat were really factors.  The group was exhausted and dehydrated.  Alan teed off first, but didn't really have any gas left.  Jeremy hit next and pulled it into the trees left.  Rob went down the middle and Chris was only a little left of that.

Jeremy found his ball and punched out across the fairway to about 120 yards.  At this point you can switch to the video below for live action shots of the final swings - or read on.

From beside the cart path on the right Jeremy hit a wonderful high wedge that flew all the way to the back pin and stuck.  4 feet for par.  Rob hit his second shot pin-hi, but it slid off the green and into that nasty, thick rough Scotty seems so fond of.  Rob mishit his chip and Team Goldberg was looking pretty good.  But Rob redeemed himself by making the gutsy par saving 12 footer.  Jeremy had his 4 footer left and he smoothly brushed it in.  All Square after 18 - and onto the tiebreaker.

Back on #18 tee play was backed up, so the group moved to an opening on #11 for the first hole of sudden death.  Jeremy, Rob and Chris hit three of the nicest tee shots under pressure I've ever seen.  All in the fairway.  All in wedge range.

Rob hit first - to 3 or 4 feet, but above the hole - not a sure thing by any means.  Chris then made the green as well.  With all the pressure on his shoulders Jeremey missed the green right and left himself a twisting 10 footer for par.  When that hooked wide past the hole the match was over.

Congratulations Chris & Rob!

2012 PBB Champions:  Bill Levy & Charlie Horgan

The 2012 PBB final was a Saxony Classic - a match of intensity, camaraderie and good sportsmanship.  It took all 18 holes and a lot of gutsy golf to determine our winners.

Horgan/Levy took the Front 1 Up courtesy of two natural birdies by Mr. Levy (on #4 and #9).  They pressed hard to widen their lead on the back, Charlie winning both #10 and #11.  Valenti wouldn't stand for that and quickly won two back with net pars on both #12 and #13 getting his side back to 1 Down.  Levy took #14, but Guido came right back with a great 10 foot putt for an up/down par and the win on #15.  All missed the green on #16, save Valenti who put it on the back fringe and then made a wonderful, downhill curling lag to within 3 ft of the front pin.  If he could win the hole it would be All Square.  But Levy responded with a chip over the bunker that nearly went in:  hole pushed.

Everyone hit the fairway on #17, but none made the green.  Charlie chipped up close, looking like a sure bet for bogie/net par.  Again Valenti held them off with his putter, droping a tense 8 footer for a natural par - which pushed the hole, but left Valenti/Corso down one going to #18.

Nerves on the final tee kept all short of the 150.  Having to win the hole to extend the match, both Valenti and Corso went at the pin and missed left.  Levy came up short, but Charlie put his hybrid on the front of the green.  Charlie then lagged up to 4 feet and Valenti chipped to 6 feet.  When Valenti's putt slid by on the low side it was over.

Congratulations to our new Partners' Best Ball Champions - Major veteran Charlie Horgan and first time major Champion Bill Levy.
