A major change to 2012 play is a new system of tiebreakers - the USGA recommended system. For all rounds (except the finals) ties will be broken by score on the back nine. In the finals, it's extra holes & sudden death. Read the Tournament Committee's announcement here - New Tiebreaker
In case you aren't familiar with these events, here's how they work:
- In the Opening Day Scramble foursomes are organized with roughly equal total handicaps. Best net score on each hole counts and in addition to lowest score, there are also prizes for closest to the pin and driving distance/accuracy.
- Partners' Best Ball is a team event - pick a partner and using your best net score on each hole go up against another twosome in match play. Strategic choice of partner is key. Two Hams just don't work as well as Ham & Eggs.
- President's Cup is one draw for the whole club. Using handicaps you'll have to get through people of all levels in your quest for the cup. Again, match play.
- Club Championship is open to everyone - with a catch: no handicaps. To give the rest of us something to do while Andy wins it (again), higher handicap players can sign up for A, B, C or D flights. There are no handicaps within a flight; it's match play, straight up.
- The Memorial is our most complicated scoring. Everyone is assigned a point target based on his handicap - high handicappers have lower targets. In play you earn 1 point for bogie, 2 for par, 4 for a birdie and 8 for an eagle (all scores gross). He who exceeds his target by the biggest margin wins. The points are accumulated over two rounds.
- Closing Day in past was a scramble - similar to Opening Day, but without that wide-eyed, spring enthusiasm. Last year Andy made it a double ball event: Foursome Best Ball and Yellow Ball. The weather can be a bit rough, so this event is for the hearty. Usually combined with the final Saxony Club meeting and officers elections for the following year.
And remember anytime you're in the hunt for some hardware, watch out for Woody - he's hungry and THIS IS THE YEAR.
