Last Week to Qualify for PBB

Let's Play Golf

Current News & Conditions

A Wash Out.
A total miss - not even one brave foursome on the course.  As far as I can tell this is the first Saturday rain out in 3 years.  Nothing in 2008 or 2008 and that spring at Hudson Hills doesn't count.  So there goes the perfect record.  By 6:30 this morning there were puddles on the 18th green.  I can only imagine how soggy it must be out there now.  As a small consolation the round might not have been that great - the greens were still very raw and bumpy from aeration.  This rain will help them swell up and heal.  Maybe next week we go low.

To occupy an indoor day on-line I've set out some ideas for passing the time below under the heading "Recommended Reading."  Enjoy.

We just heard that Michael Santise, passed away.  Mike ran the Saxon Grill and the The Grill at Sprain Lake.  There will be a wake on Tuesday, 7-9 pm at Ruggiero & Sons Funeral Home in Yonkers.

April 30 will be last week to qualify for Partners Best Ball - unless Hammer changes his mind about the timetable or need for qualifying.  See PBB page (under T&E) for more details and to get your team's custom scorecard with handicaps.  And check out the Opening Day page if you haven't seen the recap or pictures yet.

The weekly is Match Play vs Par.  Use your full handicap and go head to head against Old Man Par.  It will take a good score to claim the money.  A note on the weekly prizes - winners will be awarded Pro Shop credits.  Charlie's been great to us - it's only right that we support him.  And he gets great deals on Callaway equipment.  So save up your credits for that hot new Lamborghini-technology, carbon-titanium composite driver.  Nothing like the long ball.

April 30 is the last of our 6:30 starts.  On May 7, the first time will be 5:40 - as early as it gets.  Check back next week to see your group's new hour.

Think Golf All Week
Here's a way to keep your golfing spirit alive on those open periods not named Saturday.

The NYTimes staff includes two of the best golf writers around:  Larry Dorman covers the PGA and Bill Pennington does a personal interest golf piece on Mondays called "On Par."  On Par is in blog format - with a main section and  commentaries (this week on long putters and walking) - and frequently includes bits on rules, equipment or swing tips.   April 18 was the first column of 2011 -  a witty welcome back that I really enjoyed.  And this week's is even more appropriate for us: "Early Birds Less Likely to Catch the Birdies."

I also enjoy two EMagazines that are pretty amazing visual treats.  Makes you wonder how print will survive.  Published on-line each Monday "Golf World" and "Global Golf Post" are great updates on the weekend tournament action and the game itself.

Go take a look and consider reading them every week.  Save them to your favorites.  More golf - can't hurt, right?
