First Round Memorial

Sept 17th

Our First Fall Day: So I guess summer is over as we went off in near frosty conditions - and never felt like taking off a layer for the whole round.  Number 2 is now playing as a par 4 again - Sal Caltabelotta says they switched it over just after his foursome went through, so all 10 Saxony groups got to play the Memorial at Par 71.  Whew - that would have been a complicated fix.

I only saw 25 of the Memorial scores, so don't have the full picture.  What I have is posted on the Memorial home page, but here's a spoiler:  perennial Major contender and reigning PBB Champion, Pete Ennis is atop the leaderboard with 8 points after a round of 83 (not bad for an 18 handicapper).  His partner in crime, er, partner in Best Ball, Bob Price is only a couple spots back, tied for fifth at net 0.

I dont' mean to complain, but, in the end this is a complaint.  I had such high hopes for the greens this week - the last round before aeration.  The weather was perfect; the air was dry; I couldn't wait to see what Scott and his boys could do.  It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great - and worst of all the greens weren't consistent.  Some slow, some fast.  Just not what I'd hoped for.  Maybe next month.

Saxon Woods hosted the Westchester County Senior Championship last Thursday and we were well represented by our aging ambassador, Woody.  Burroni shot a respectable net 72 to finish T5 in the 60-69 year old category.  He had a very nice, clean card, but for a double on #3.

In the continuing saga of big tournament finishes this week produced a couple nice solutions.  Jeff Bair pointed out that the USGA has a recommended system for determining a winner when play can't continue:  use score from the final 9 holes; if still tied use final 6 holes; if still tied use final 3 holes and then, if still tied look at scores on 18.  I like that.  But even better was Mike Belmont's suggestion:  Cigar-in-mouth and grow-in-throat Mike simply said "Go back and play 18 again."  Like it couldn't be more obvious.  But you know, in all likelihood the group behind would be ours and playing one hole as a six-some shouldn't be that big a deal.  So let's try it.  If Hammer and Andy continue their deadlock in the final round of the Club Championship on a Saturday, let's have a cart waiting.  Send them back and settle things with one more run at 18 - just like the pros.  I'd love it.

Doherty Memories

by Bob Price
I only had one conversation with John Doherty and that was on Sept.8th.  We were standing in line, waiting for the golf office to open to book times for the following week.  I was supposed to be going to jury duty downtown at the federal court house.  John told me that he was moving to the World Trade buildings on Monday after working up in Stanford for so many years. I said I was not looking forward to the trip into Manhattan as it would be a hassle; his reply was that he would miss his car ride up to Stanford, listening to the radio and drinking coffee. That small conversation I had with John will remain with me always. It puts a human face on the tragedy for me.  I searched out his name last Friday at the 9/11 Memorial.  May he rest in peace.

The Memorial is underway.  This is a multi-week event, where the best two rounds (of up to three submitted cards) are counted. Scoring is the modified Stableford system where players are alloted a point “quota” based on handicap. He with the most points above his quota is the winner.

You do not need to sign up for this event, just be sure to mark on your scorecard that you want it to count for The Memorial. Personalized cards available below.
