Memorial Extended (due to rain)

Oct 1st

Another Wet Saturday: Although the rain did stop and the course did open, many did not play.  The Memorial will be extended to next Saturday.  Hammer's explanation is on the Memorial page - and a link to email him with questions.  (My apologies to those who checked the site Saturday night/Sunday morning - I was a little hasty in posting those results).  A few of us did fairly well in the sloppy conditions - Sigona turned in a very nice +6; Woody, Grammolini & Valenti were +1.  In all though, most  struggled to get over our quota.  Rich Hastings at +7 is still the one with the best chance to catch Pete.  Details of the event, including hole-by-hole scoring for rounds 1 & 2 are on the Memorial home page.

Another email should be coming out soon with details on the date and set up for the Closing Day Scramble - which I've renamed the Fall Classic, since I am not yet ready to say goodbye to golf for the year (and have heard it may not be a Scramble). In the meantime, if you are going to be around for the next couple of weeks and want to play - sign up is to the right.  Andy is considering either the last day of EZ Reserve (Oct 22) or getting one more week out of the year and playing Oct 29.

Last week's Golf Fitness Tips were met with a resounding yawn from the couches of Westchester, so the Saxonysite Gym is closed.

Mike Belmont confirmed that the county is continuing the EZ Reserve set up from last year.  If you plan to retain your time you need to get the $1,400 (same price as last year) in to the proshop by November 30.  On Dec 1 any unclaimed times will be available to the public - and word has it that the Maple Moor crew are already calling to see what might come open.  Seems they didn't appreciate the Hutch overrunning their course this summer.

As noted above there are only a few more weeks left in our EZ Reserve year.  The last Saturday of guaranteed times is in 3 weeks - Oct 22.  As an unnecessarily harsh reminder of the shortening days and potential for frost, tee times move ahead a full 40 minutes next week.  First group is scheduled for 7:30.  If it's warmer than 42 degrees there will be enough daylight for us to get off as much as half an hour earlier though.

Our New Mascot

The Red Tailed Hawk

On 16th Tee   What a manificent bird.  And what a     great shot (if I do say so myself) -         taken on the tee box of #16.

Much as I hate to admit it, the        turkeys are gone.  I prefer to think  that they found greener pastures, as  opposed to being found by bigger  predators.  But the wonderful family  of Red Tailed Hawks is more than a  fair trade.  There seem to be two  chicks  (eyasses) this year and both  are  thriving; this guy looks huge and  is  probably close to 3 pounds - which    doesn't seem like much, but it's a big number for a bird.  He should be around for the rest of our season - or as long as the squirrels last.

Some more factoids on our new friend:

      • Females are heavier - weighing up to 25% more than males - who stay slim for hunting; or at least roaming the golf course.
      • Normal flying rate is 20 - 40 mph, while peak diving speeds are closer to DiFiore's swing - 120 mph
      • Pairs mate for life and return to the same nesting area for several years.
      • This year's chicks will not breed next year, but should return to set up their own nests in 2013.
      • When they do, eggs are laid as the course opens in March/April and chicks hatch about a month later.
      • Prey is generally smaller mammals, rodents and the occasional other bird.  I was hoping they'd take a couple of the geese.

If anyone has an idea of where they are nesting, please let me know.  I'd love to get some more shots, closer to home.
