Don't Read This

Dec 3rd

I almost hate to write it.  I mean, you weren't there - so how rude of me would it be to write nice things about what you missed?  But if you've read this far, you might as well continue 'cause it was amazing. The temperature was so much warmer than the thermometer that if you didn't actually bask in the sunshine on the 6th green, you probably still think December golf is for Canadians.   The eight or nine of us who teed off around 9 a.m. (okay, there was a frost delay) were treated to a very pleasant round played without need of a leaf rule.  Conditions were better than anything 2010 had to offer - in any month.  Don't miss out again - come play a pre-Christmas round - at least once.  You'll have fun.

Seems like I owe someone an apology.  Not sure who he might be, but last week I accused an anonymous path designer of creating Ramp 17.5 from Saxon to the Hutch.  Turns out the slashing was larger than the slating.  The actual slate walkway is quite reasonable - quite nice and much smaller than the wide swath cut by the back hoe.  It's just the right size for a push cart and nowhere near big enough for a golf cart.   Guess the county got something right - oh, wait - it's only one lane.  Hope nobody's coming when I'm going.  They can't help themselves - still, not bad - have a look for yourself:

That Was The Year That Was

Dollars & Sense
As a CFO I look to the numbers to tell me how we're doing.  That doesn't work on a golf course though - I frequently enjoy a scramgling bogie more than a lucky par (good thing as there are a lot of 'em).  So I accept that the numbers don't tell the whole story and often have very little to say about life at Saxon Woods.  Nevertheless I can't resist a good spreadsheet.

So at this link you will find our 2011 Financial Statements.  Treasurer Joe Valenti has organized spending into two funds: Operating and Surplus.  And that's how you'll find the numbers reported.

Show Me The Money

As you browse the statements, do me a favor and hover your mouse over thehover here for more info icon for more details (only works on financials).  It's a small thing, but it took me hours to figure out how to do it.  Thanks.  Fun, right?

That type of Fund Accounting is how the Government does its bookkeeping.  I'm more a fan of Cash In/Cash Out - CPAs want the straight goods.   Here's how it looked to me in round figures:  Revenue $5,000: Spending $10,000.  Bottom line - How'd That Happen?  Closing Day alone was over $3,500!  So just like the US economy or Greece or even 2008 - hope we enjoyed it, 'cause we won't see a year like that again for a long time.

Senor Valenti has kept immaculate (if lengthy) records.  So should my simple summary of the P&L not be sedative enough I am also posting his fine set of auxillary books:  Enjoy.
