Happy New Year (except that the course is closed)

2011 SAXIES

Saxony Awards
Awards for stellar personal achievement in the best spirit of the Saxony Club.

Best Posted Rounds:   Andy Eisenberg posted the best score of the year: a one over round of 72 on July 31. Wow. We can’t all go that low, but we can occasionally vanquish our own demons and shoot “A Good Round For Me.” At some point this year every one of us posted a net score below par.  Well, almost everyone - sorry ‘bout that, Jim.  Nevertheless there were some great rounds. Among the best were:

Player Net Score & Date
Ennis, Peter  -8 79 on 8/6
Appel, Fred -7 76 on 8/6
Horgan, Greg -6 77 on 10/8
Wooley, Joseph -5 90 on 7/16
Bair, Jeffrey -5 81 on 7/20
Greenberg, Bruce -5 84 on 8/13
Vogel, Mike -5 78 on 8/6
Pappas, Nick -5 80 on 7/7

Worst Round of the Year – Are you kidding?  Like that score got posted. A few horrors did get recorded though. Suffice it to say that as bad as it got for you, no one admitted to a worse day than the one Bill Levy had in April. Maybe Most Honest Golfer would be a better title.

Biggest Hangover/Worst Night’s Sleep:  Ron Halpern. Shot 91 (net par) on June 11th and 105 the next day. An extra 14 shots over 18 holes just for going home. Who says golf is fun? Ditto for Greg Horgan who shot 77 on Oct 8th and came back the next day to shoot 91.  Ouch.  Stay out of the good scotch, boys.

Best Night’s Sleep:  Pete Ennis went to bed having nightmares about the 104 he’d chunked through on 9/16. Woke up and shot an 83 the next day. That 21 stroke swing would have won the Saxie, except the first round was played at Spring Brook, so only merits an Honorable Mention. The Award for Best Overnight Transformation goes to Guido Corso, who put up a 93 on 7/23, but came right back the next day and posted a brilliant 81. Was it a Tempurpedic?

Best Week at The Office: Bill Levy. Who, after hacking though a 92 on 8/20 came back seven days later and posted a 78. Whatever he did that week – I want what he’s having.

Nicest Streak:  Three consecutive rounds net below par was the record (think that’s why pro tournaments are four rounds?).  Multiple Honorees here:

  • Bruce Greenberg, shot below net par on 3 consecutive August Saturdays (gross 89,84,89)
  • Bill Levy who got hot at the end of August (gross 78,82,80)
  • Joe Valenti who knocked out rounds of 85,85,84 from 7/31 to 8/13
  • Honorable Mention to Nick Pappas with 84,80,87 (two of those were at Mohansic).

Most familiar with the dark corners of the course:
Antony Sigona who not only played the most home course rounds of any Saxonite (63 times), but also took the most slashes at the ball in 2011 (5,785).   He’s been everywhere, man.  Antony wasn’t alone in chasing that record.  Others who hit the ball a time or two around SW this year:

Player Slashes
Horgan, Greg   5,019
Ryan, Ed   4,601
Cook, Tom   4,204
Gramolini, Tom   4,189
Burroni, Woody   4,015

Benedict Arnold Award – for most rounds played at courses other than SW: 13 betrayals.  McNaughton, you traitor.

Half Miler  Conor McGaley with the most 9 hole scores (14)
Half Miler having the best time – Conor who shot 40 or 41 each time he played half the course (except for one 38).  Nice.

Best Away Game:  Steve Wagner, who shot 89 (net 68) at Winged Foot.  (I must have missed that invite).  However his moment in sports heaven was hard earned – the week before the golf gods had visited a 102 upon him at Saxon Woods.  Talk about ups and downs.

Doing the Most, with the Least: For starting with a sow’s ear and making a silk purse – Mike Belmont and his crew. What an amazing transformation in just a few months.  Mike hosted over 44,000 rounds at Saxon Woods in 2011 – over 2,500 more than Sprain. And he did it in one of the worst summers on record – they usually lose 70 days to weather each year; Mike lost 113 days and still gave us a great summer.  Thanks, Mike.

A foot note for the statisticians out there. I used the round differential less year end handicap index as a proxie for net under par. It should always be close, but it could be off by a stroke or two every now and then. But close counts in golf, right?

Next week will be the last website update until we get closer to an opening day.  So check back one more time - and then take a couple weeks off.  Have A Very Happy New Year.
